It is necessary to cover two routes starting from Lecce to know Salento: one along the “Riviera azzurra salentina” towards Otranto which continues where Adriatic sea finishes and merges with the Ionian sea, up to Leuca; the other along the “Riviera nirentina” on the ionic coast toward Nardò up to Gallipoli.
Otranto is the city of the Eight hundred Martyres massacred by Turks of Mahomet in 1480 during the famous “sack”.
The full of fish stretch of Alimini Lakes looms out nearby the Adriatic coast.
You can find the coast-lines of San Cataldo, San Foca, Otranto, Porto Badisco, Torre dell’orso, Castro, Santa Cesarea on the coast road up to Capo di Leuca which divides the two sea.
Pinewoods alternate to sandy shores, rocks and caves.
In Porto Badisco, the shout of Acate and other companions of Aeneas “Italiam,Italiam” calls to mind. In Santa Cesarea the natural thermal baths have a great repute for their therapeutic properties.
The place is picturesque and agreeable .There are also modern and exemplary hotel and health facilities. Castro is one of the most evocative places in Salento thanks to his panoramic position and coast line. “Romanelli” and “Zinzulusa” caves have a palaentologic and turistic importance. You can find the “Abyss”, deep and mysterious, nearby Porto Badisco and the “Devil’s cave” nearby Leuca too.
Capo di Santa Maria di Leuca is situated at the extreme end of the “Boot of Italy”, with his Virgin Mary Sanctuary “Finibus Terrae” (at the border of the Land),unceasing destination of pilgrims.
According to a Christian legend the Sanctuary in Leuca is the terrestrial anteroom of Heaven.
The route from Lecce to Gallipoli offers to the tourist more beauties.
The ionic coast is the crown of bathing centres and beaches on a cerulean and clear sea.
After Nardò, the ancient “Niretum”, Roman municipality and Byzantine stronghold which has a stately Romanesque Cathedral, you can find the “Riviera nirentina” with coast-lines ,beaches and pinewoods: Santa Caterina di Nardò, Santa Maria al Bagno characterized by the “Four Pillars”, Torre Suda, Torre Vado, Porto Cesareo and Gallipoli.
The white city of Gallipoli really deserves the appellation “beautiful” (which is in the Greek etymon) thanks to his charming position, to the singularity of his monuments (the Angioino Castle, Sant’Agata Cathedral and the Hellenic Fountain),to his beautiful panorama, to the splendour of Lido and to the fervent activity of his inhabitants. You can have a foreboding of East in the tortuous alleys of the centre.
There are also many “Dolmen” (big blocks of stone) and “Menhir” (row graivestones) situated between Giuggianello and Minervino di Lecce, in Muro Leccese and nearby Melendugno.
